What is Troton Master C48 VHS 2:1 Ultra Speed Air Dry?

Troton Master C48 VHS 2:1 Ultra Speed Air Dry is an extremely fast-drying two-component acrylic clear coat developed for fast, high-quality automotive refinishing. Thanks to Air Dry technology, the clear coat cures at room temperature without oven drying and is ready for polishing in approximately 60 minutes at 20 °C.

The clear coat has a very high solids content (VHS, Very High Solids), providing an impressive high-gloss finish and excellent colour depth.

C48 VHS is particularly suitable for repair painting where a faster turnaround time is desired without compromising on quality. The short drying time reduces energy consumption and allows painted parts to be finished more quickly.

The clear coat flows smoothly and creates an even, high-gloss finish that generally requires no additional polishing when applied correctly.

Note: Hardener is sold separately.

What can Troton C48 VHS Clear Coat be used for?

Troton C48 VHS is particularly suitable for fast automotive refinishing and achieving a high-gloss paint finish.

  • Clear coating automotive body panels and parts
  • Finishing small and large paint repairs
  • Application over solvent-based and water-based basecoats
  • Application over existing paintwork in good condition after proper preparation
  • Fast repair painting without oven drying
  • Applications requiring a high-gloss finish with excellent colour depth

The clear coat can be applied over basecoats or existing paintwork in good condition, provided the surface has been properly matted and thoroughly degreased.

How to apply Troton C48 VHS 2:1 Clear Coat

  • Prepare the surface. Make sure the basecoat is ready for clear coating according to the manufacturer's instructions. Existing paintwork must be thoroughly cleaned, matted and degreased before application.
  • Mix the clear coat. Mix 2 parts clear coat with 1 part C48 VHS hardener. No additional thinner is required.
  • Adjust the spray gun.
  • RP spray gun: 1.2–1.4 mm nozzle, 2.0–2.2 bar
  • HVLP spray gun: 1.3–1.4 mm nozzle, 2.0 bar
  • Apply the clear coat. Choose the desired number of coats:
  • 1.5 coats: First apply a medium, slightly thinner coat, followed by one full coat. Dry film thickness approximately 50–60 µm.
  • 2 coats: Apply two full coats. Dry film thickness approximately 60–70 µm.
  • Allow flash-off between coats. The flash-off time between coats is approximately 2–5 minutes at 20 °C.
  • Allow to dry. The clear coat is ready for polishing in approximately 60 minutes at 20 °C. Drying can be accelerated by heating, reducing the time to approximately 10 minutes at 40 °C.
  • Finish the surface if necessary. C48 VHS generally produces a very high-gloss finish without additional polishing. Any dust particles or minor surface imperfections can be removed using suitable sanding and polishing products once the clear coat has cured.
  • Note! Do not exceed the recommended amount of hardener. Drying time increases significantly at temperatures below 20 °C. The manufacturer does not recommend IR drying.

Wear appropriate personal protective equipment suitable for 2K painting and ensure adequate ventilation.

Frequently asked questions about Troton C48 VHS Clear Coat

How quickly does C48 VHS Clear Coat dry?

At 20 °C, the clear coat is ready for polishing in approximately 60 minutes without oven drying. At 40 °C, it is ready for polishing in approximately 10 minutes. Drying slows down significantly at temperatures below 20 °C.

Does the clear coat require a separate hardener?

Yes. C48 VHS is a two-component clear coat that must be mixed with hardener at a ratio of 2:1. The hardener is sold separately.

Which hardener is suitable for this clear coat?

Two hardener options are available for Troton C48 VHS Clear Coat:

  • Standard: For normal painting conditions
  • Slow: For temperatures above 25 °C

How long does the mixed clear coat remain usable?

The clear coat and hardener mixture remains usable for approximately 80 minutes at 20 °C. Only prepare the amount needed for the job.

Does the clear coat need polishing after application?

Generally, no. When applied correctly, C48 VHS provides an extremely glossy and even finish. If dust particles remain on the surface, they can be removed after the clear coat has dried, followed by polishing if necessary.

Can the clear coat be applied over existing paintwork?

Yes, provided the existing paintwork is in good condition and has been properly matted and degreased. The existing surface can be sanded using, for example, P360–P500 abrasive paper with a sanding machine or P600–P800 for wet sanding.

How much clear coat is needed?

One litre of ready-to-spray clear coat and hardener mixture theoretically covers approximately 9–9.5 m² at a dry film thickness of 60 µm. Actual consumption depends on the spraying technique, film thickness and shape of the painted surface.

Does the clear coat require thinner?

No. C48 VHS is designed to be used without additional thinner. Mix the clear coat and hardener at a ratio of 2:1, after which the mixture is ready for spraying.

Can the clear coat be dried without a spray booth oven?

Yes! Thanks to Air Dry technology, the clear coat cures at room temperature. This saves time and energy and allows fast application without separate oven drying.

How many coats of clear coat should be applied?

The manufacturer recommends 1.5–2 coats. The final number of coats depends on the spraying technique and the desired dry film thickness.
