Lifting / Solvent Aggression
The topcoat lifts the underlying layer, leading to wrinkles, swelling, or the formation of bubbles.
Description:
Lifting or solvent aggression is usually caused by improper painting conditions or incompatible paint layers.
Cause:
- The topcoat is sprayed before the underlying layer has dried.
- Inappropriate evaporation time between layers.
- Poor solvent resistance of the undercoat or excessively strong solvent in the topcoat.
- Poor adhesion of the underlying layer.
- Excessively thick layers.
Repair:
- Lightly sand the affected area, seal the surface, and respray.
- Be especially careful with sensitive substrates: keep each layer thin and allow sufficient evaporation time.
- If lifting is severe, remove the entire area completely and repaint the full paint system.
